And I wish that uliginosa was hardy for us. On the east side of the Hudson River it is...directly east of us...but we are higher altitude and just that much colder, I guess, so it never returns for me. *sigh* And yes, it looks good in groups, rising up from behind shorter perennials or shrubs.vicki johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05564450760405974595noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193243073610128607.post-82833644883978069742008-09-23T00:50:00.000-07:002008-09-23T00:50:00.000-07:00Thanks, Vicki- the S. uliginosa thing probably has...Thanks, Vicki- the S. uliginosa thing probably has to go with usage; I'm sure it displays better in drifts of more than one plant! It's also hardy for you, which is a big deal. I listened to you and Ken discuss wintering over S. guaranitica while chopping mine down for the third time this season and wishing it was a little less invasive here, so everything is relative :o).

I'm still enjoying your work immensely - thanks, as always, for the company and cameraderie!Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12538769872317933763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193243073610128607.post-64595138998518913862008-09-22T16:10:00.000-07:002008-09-22T16:10:00.000-07:00Bravo, Jeff!!;^)Good on ya for being opinionated a...Bravo, Jeff!!
;^)
Good on ya for being opinionated and ranting. I often don't tell people what I teach just because they think I'm going to correct their grammar or something! Actually, I work in American Lit and Film--don't do much with composition anyway. The great thing about being an English teacher is that everyone assumes I'm a Democrat (correctly), so I don't have to make any public statements. Anyway, if I didn't post in the morning (before I've had enough coffee) or in the evening (after I've had too much wine), maybe they'd be cleaner--but then we have that whole work thing going on . . .Cosmohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14260783700118031314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193243073610128607.post-14368092704548066082008-09-20T11:41:00.000-07:002008-09-20T11:41:00.000-07:00Glad nobody seems to be offended (yet) - I've been...Glad nobody seems to be offended (yet) - I've been called a curmudgeon myself, and even within the last few days. I'm embarrassed that there are some typos, etc., in this post which haven't been fixed, but for some reason the editing function is not working for me right now. Cosmo, I think you said you taught English, so please trust that I really do know where to use a comma as opposed to a period!Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12538769872317933763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193243073610128607.post-6288057430327991012008-09-20T08:23:00.000-07:002008-09-20T08:23:00.000-07:00That was fun, Jeff! I actually love my salvia ugli (just having fun with your punning), but you might have added to your rant the fact that it stinks! Anyway, I have to show your post to the Curmudgeon (who is STILL not blogging because he's not happy with his page design yet)--he rolls his eyes every time I plant something one can find on a highway median or an IHOP border.

Oh, and I SO agree wtih you about standing ovations--our ceremonies at school are aerobic workouts anymore.

Rant away! Unfortunately we inherited a huge M. grandiflora - one of my goals in life is to have it removed, but I have to convince Ron that all Southern homes don't HAVE to have this monstrosity (people from the frozen north are impressed that we have one growing outside... go figure.) I'd list M. soulangeana (sp?) in the same category - our neighbors have one that's gorgeous for about 3 days every March until a freeze turns it completely brown. I like the idea of "gardening by proxy"!Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12538769872317933763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193243073610128607.post-83835629099583962562008-09-20T05:48:00.000-07:002008-09-20T05:48:00.000-07:00What a great post. I am glad I am not the only on...What a great post. I am glad I am not the only one with plant predjudices, unfortunately for me, I have to make sure they do not reveal themselves in my work. I will tell customers if a plant is difficult to grow, but I can't say if I think it is butt-ugly or common as dirt. I had a customer this spring who was adamant at not getting anything her neighbors had, but had no clue what she wanted. Ironically she ended up picking a Purple Leaf Plum and some Indian Hawthorn. I did not realize that gardening was a such a competative sport. I am like you in that lack of space dictates how I garden. My lot is only 100 x 35 and that includes house and detached garage. All of my space if full and so I have gradually taken over city property between the sidewalk and street. At the civic league last week, I found out that the city wants to know what you are planting there and prefers things less than 30" tall. I am a little beyond that at this point. One category of plants you did not mention are the ones that look great in other people's yards like massive Magnolia grandiflora or Blue Atlas Cedars.Leshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18281256160705697856noreply@blogger.com
